The Year of Intentional Editing
Photo editing in 2025 is all about intentionality. Gone are the days of heavy-handed filters. Today's clients want edits that feel natural, timeless, and uniquely personal.
Here are the biggest trends I've been incorporating into my work this year.
1. AI-Assisted Masking & Selection
Tools like Photoshop's Generative Fill and Lightroom's AI-powered Select Subject have fundamentally changed how we approach complex selections. What used to take 30 minutes now takes seconds — leaving more time for the creative work that really matters.
The best edits are the ones you don't notice.
2. Film Simulation Aesthetics
Film presets have evolved far beyond simple grain overlays. Clients are increasingly requesting that digital look — slight color shifts, natural halation, and organic grain that breathes life into modern digital files.
3. Natural Skin Retouching
Heavy airbrushing is out. Clients want to look like themselves — just the best version of themselves. Frequency separation, dodge & burn, and subtle texture preservation are the techniques that define professional retouching in 2025.
4. Moody Color Grading
Muted, desaturated shadows with warm highlights continue to dominate portraiture. The "orange and teal" look has been replaced by something more nuanced — earthy, organic palettes that complement real skin tones.
Final Thoughts
The best editors in 2025 are the ones who listen to their clients, understand light, and know when to stop. Less is almost always more.
